In Memoriam - Jim Gibbs
We are saddened to share news of the unexpected passing of Jim Gibbs on Saturday, September 23, 2017.
Jim was a founding member of the Board of Directors and without his dedication and energy, Opportunities For Independence, Inc. would not be present today. Jim had an unwavering belief in the role of not for profits in serving the people of Manitoba and had a special place in his heart for people living with intellectual disabilities; especially those who needed a second chance.
Jim steered the agency through the difficult first years of becoming a not for profit as Treasurer of OFI, and for many years thereafter volunteered his time filling the role of accountant to the agency. Jim formally rejoined the Board of Directors again in 2013, continuing to contribute his wisdom in financial affairs and his compassion for the individuals served by the agency.
In honour of Jim, Opportunities Board of Directors formed the Jim Gibbs Academic Award. The award has been established in recognition of the outstanding contributions made by Jim Gibbs to the development of Opportunities for Independence, Inc. Jim recognized the importance of the intersection of economics and social responsibility and it is through his work that the organization continues to provide services to a unique group of individuals.
The purpose of this award is to contribute toward the tuition costs of an employee of Opportunities for Independence who is currently attending, or planning to enter, a program at any of Winnipeg’s three post-secondary institutions that will lead to a degree or diploma. Preference is given to students who are entering disciplines/programs within the Social Sciences, Business Administration and Accounting.
Jim was a unique and vibrant man and the OFI family will surely miss him. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and many friends.
